Alloying metals is a skill with broad applications across many aspects of jewelry making. Particularly if you alloy metals for fusing to steel, this skill will allow you to create just the right mix of metals to achieve the desired creative effect. In this three-hour live Zoom session, we will cover the basics of alloying, including how to determine the formula for a particular alloy and how to use a jeweler scale to formulate the correct proportions.

We will walk through the alloying process step by step including proper preparation of a crucible or charcoal block, how to gauge when a metal is completely alloyed and troubleshooting.  I will demonstrate the creation of four different alloys: 20k green gold, 18k yellow gold, sterling silver and shibuichi. In addition, I will show you how to use an ingot mold to create larger pieces of alloyed metals.

After you register, I will send you a PayPal invoice for the $90 class fee and the $40 kit if you choose. If you need only the crucibles or only the jeweler scale the cost will be $20.

Kit: A kit is not required for this class. However, if you wish, I can provide a kit containing a jeweler scale and two small crucibles with a handle for a cost of $40 plus shipping.

Supplies: A rolling mill will be needed for this class as it will be used to roll out your alloyed metals. In addition, you will need to provide at least one ounce of fine silver (in any form) and at least two ounces of copper in any form. If you wish to create gold alloys you will need at least two pennyweight (DWT) of 24k gold casting grains. You will need a dual gas or acetylene/air torch as well as a complete soldering station set up. You should have borax available to prep your crucible.

Skill Level: Students will need to have competent torch skills.

Registration Deadline

Feb. 26 if you will need crucibles/jeweler scale shipped to you

March 1 if you do not need crucibles/jeweler scale shipped to you
